Business Support Specialist I
The purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of general technical support duties in support of an assigned division or program; and to provide general information and assistance to the public regarding City policies and procedures.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: I
This is the entry level class in the Business Support Specialist series. This class is distinguished from the (II level) by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series and by the level of supervision required in the performance of assigned duties. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
Essential Functions:
50% - Performs a variety of general technical support duties in support of assigned department, division, or team. Documents standard operating procedures, prepares reports, compiles data for analysis, coordinates activities, investigates and resolves problems and handles special projects as assigned.
25% - Performs duties in both group/team and individual contributor settings. Operates a personal computer for use of word processing, spreadsheet and database management, and presentation applications. Performs routine data entry; enters and pulls information from a variety of systems and reviews reports for accuracy. Supports new ideas and serves as part of the implementation team.
25% - Works under direct supervision. Follows detailed instructions, standard operating procedures and desk manuals and reports any deviation to lead/supervisor. Serves as intake for questions and issues in the department and refers complex items to higher levels in the department/division. Identifies and reports quality concerns.
Note Time spent on each essential function will vary based on operational needs and is only intended to be an approximation over the course of a full year. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function in the performance of this job.
Relevant Background and Formal Education
Demonstrated skills, competencies, and knowledge required for this job are most often acquired through the following practical experience and level of academic education and training as suggested below.
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED).
Experience: This is an entry level position and prior experience is not required.
Education and Experience Equivalency: One year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of relevant academic coursework beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.
Certifications and Licenses: Must possess or be able to acquire the following certifications and/or licenses required in accordance with standards established by departmental policy. At this time, there are no required certifications and/or licenses required.
Technical Skills: Basic Skills and Knowledge: Work requires basic skills and knowledge in approaches and systems, which support the design and implementation of major programs and/or processes organization wide. Independent judgment and decision-making abilities are necessary to apply technical skills effectively.
Specialized Computer Equipment and Software: Microsoft Office.
Additional Information
Supervision Exercised: This classification requires no supervision or direction of others.
Supervision Received: Receives Immediate Direction: This classification normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. Immediate supervisor may provide close and constant review.

Human Collaboration Skills: Communications regarding interpretation of policies may be made after discussion of different points of view. Work may require providing advice to others outside direct reporting relationships on specific problems or general policies. Interactions with others outside the organization may be stressful, negative and require high levels of tact or persuasion to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.
Reading: Intermediate - Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Math: Basic - Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Writing: Basic - Ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Long-term- 6 months, with possible extension
Start date: Approximate end of February, beginning of March.
Schedule: 7:00 AM- 3:30 PM (Mon-Fri) OR 6:00 AM- 4:30 PM (Mon- Thurs)
Pay: $19.98/hour- $23.99/hour (depending upon experience)
